Kenny Thornsberry

Bio

Kenny Thornsberry serves as Bullitt East’s Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator and has been an important part of the program’s success since returning to the coaching staff in 2021. A Bullitt East alumnus and former Charger football player, Thornsberry is also a graduate of the University of Louisville and currently teaches math at Bullitt East.

Thornsberry’s coaching career has included stops at Spencer County, Bullitt East and Nelson County. He also gained head-coaching experience during a two-year stint at Nelson County before stepping away from coaching for several years while continuing his career in education.

In 2021, Thornsberry returned to the Bullitt East program under Head Coach Ethan Atchley, coaching tight ends and linebackers. His return coincided with an important step forward for the Chargers, who finished 8-4 and recorded the program’s first winning season and playoff victory since 2014.

Thornsberry was promoted to Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator in 2022. In his first season leading the defense, the Chargers allowed just 17.1 points per game, ranking ninth among Kentucky Class 6A teams. Bullitt East finished 14-1 and captured the first state championship in program history with a 28-27 victory over Louisville Male.

The defense remained among Class 6A’s best in 2023, allowing 19.9 points per game and finishing sixth in the classification in scoring defense. Bullitt East finished 9-3 and advanced to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, continuing the program’s success following its championship season.

In 2024, Thornsberry’s unit again finished among the top defenses in Kentucky’s largest classification. Bullitt East allowed 18.8 points per game, ranking 10th in Class 6A, and held five opponents to 14 points or fewer during another playoff season.

Thornsberry and the Chargers continued that consistency in 2025. Bullitt East allowed 22.1 points per game, ranking 11th in Class 6A, while helping the Chargers finish 7-5 and advance to the second round of the playoffs with a first-round victory over North Hardin.

Beyond the stats, Thornsberry has played a significant role in establishing the identity of the Bullitt East program. His emphasis on toughness, preparation, work ethic and accountability has helped shape the Chargers’ defensive culture and contributed to four consecutive winning seasons, four playoff appearances and the 2022 Class 6A State Championship since his return to the program.
